Grenaby Limeworks Builders and Stonemasons on the Isle of Man specialize in the use of traditional lime mortar, plasters and renders, masonry, stonework and building conservation. We are experienced and qualified stonemasons and plasterers, dedicated to the use of environmentally friendly sand and lime which offers natural, permeable damp-proofing for Manx stone buildings and historic brickwork.

Our recent finished projects include: restoring with pigmented lime render the historic Witches Mill in Castletown; lime rendering with a whitewash finish to The Old School House in Sulby; lime rendering with a pigmented finish at Bridge House in Castletown and lime pointing at Bridge Cottage; replacement of sand and cement pointing with sand and lime at the historic Baillie Scott Red House in Douglas; conservation and conversion of farm buildings at Ballamaddrel into artists' studios and renovation of Manx cottages in Cregneash using traditional building lime.

About us:

Mark has worked in the building industry for almost 30 years and started his training at the Isle of Man College. There he received Certificates in City and Guilds Brickwork, City and Guilds Advanced Construction and an OND in Construction. He served his four year apprenticeship with Blackburn and Sons in Castletown and has since been a self-employed mason. His interest in the preservation of the Island's Historic Buildings, through the use of sympathetic materials and traditional skills has led him to further his education. He has completed courses at the Scottish Lime Centre in Traditional Masonry, Ty-Mawr Welsh Lime Centre in Lime Plastering and Wealdon Down in Historic Brickwork. He has since become the Island's leading lime specialist and is continuing to pursue his education in Building Conservation and Traditional Masonry.

David has been a stonemason for almost 30 years and was trained by the Isle of Man Training Centre at Knockaloe in dry-stone walling and is a Dry Stone Wall Champion of Cregneash. With the founding of Grenaby Limeworks, David has also achieved accreditation in Traditional Masonry at the Scottish Lime Centre and Historic Brickwork at Wealdon Downland. His love of Manx stone cottages also extends to his music. For many years he has been the lead singer, banjo and mandolin player in the ever popular Tholtan Builders.

Together, Mark and David formed Grenaby Limeworks to provide specialist lime building services. Our work is to protect and restore homes and historic buildings of the Isle of Man with the use of traditional lime plasters, renders and stonework. The use of materials sympathetic to the original building will ensure that our building heritage is preserved for future generations to enjoy.
